THE RUKUN NEGARA was formulated responding to the 1969 race riots, the riots representing disorder and the formulated principles representing an attempt at restoring and sustaining order.  But the starting point of order in a country is good governance safeguarding the common good, which is not simply the good of the majority or the dominant culture in a pluralistic society.

THE third tenet of the Rukun Negara is Upholding the Constitution.  Meriam Webster Online Dictionary defines the Constitution as:

  • (a) The basic principles and laws of a nation, state or social group that determine the powers and duties of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it.
  • (b) A written instrument embodying the rules of a political or social organisation.

while "uphold" means:

  • - to give support
  • - to lift up
  • - to keep elevated.

IS the Rukun Negara a relic of our ancient and forgotten past?  I remember as a school boy reciting them.  They came about as a response to the racial riots of 1969.  They were enumerated as a form of national philosophy or ideology, giving us a way forward to achieving a nationhood which is enlightened and progressive.
